West Bengal with its limited coastline of 158 km, 777 sq. km inshore area, 1813 km offshore area, 17049 square km continental shelf, 2.10 lakh hectare brackishwater area and 2.88 lakh hectare freshwater area, occupies the first place in fish seed production (16717 million in 2014-15, 38.5% of the Country) and 2nd place in total fish production (16.17 lakh ton in 2014-15, 16.0% of the country) in India. More than 3.2 million fishermen and other people are engaged in this sector. Even if we consider the State Domestic Product (SDP), the fishery contributes 2.98% of SDP, which occupies the second place in the state among the Agriculture and allied activities. The state is National Productivity Award winner for sixteen consecutive years.

Supply of nutritional food, employment generation and environmental conservation are the three major challenges to be address properly in India as well as in the state of West Bengal. Fisheries and aquaculture have been identified as the very powerful sectors for addressing these three challenges. So, the accelerated development of fisheries and aquaculture is the need of the day.
